Xerxes

During the Greco-Persian Wars, Xerxes, the Persian King wanted to pass his fleet from Ancient Acanthus to Therme (today’s Thessaloniki). Sailing around the peninsula seemed to be dangerous and for this reason Xerxes ordered to dig through a canal, at the today’s location of Nea Roda. In the same area there were also the ancient cities Assa, Peloros, Siggos, Sarte. The chief of the project was Artachaes, who according to written records was the highest from all, and had the strongest voice. During the completion of the project Artachaes died, a fact that made Xerxes really sad. He honoured Artachaes with a glorious funeral and built a monument commemorating him.
