The pilgrims who wish to visit Mount Athos must prepare their entering a few days before. All pilgrims should obtain the “diamonitirio”, a kind of visa ensuring their entrance. The diamonitirio is being issued by the Pilgrims Office in Thessaloniki (+30 2310 833733, fax: +30 2310 861611) The information that will be needed is full name, father’s name, date of birth, Id number and place of issue. Foreigners should send a copy of their passport and they collect their diamonitirio from the Pilgrims Office. The number of the pilgrims that enter Mount Athos daily is restricted, and more specifically total 110 pilgrims, 100 Greeks orthodox and 10 foreigners. The diamonitirio is valid for 4 days, and pilgrims who wish to extend their stay in the peninsula should contact the Holy Community in Karyes. Most of pilgrims use to overnight in Ouranoupoli since the day they enter Mount Athos should be present at the Pilgrims Office in Ouranoupoli at 08:00 I order to collect their diamonitirio and pay 30,00€. Students pay the half by showing their student identity card. The ship’s departure takes place at 09:45.
